Model Contract Clauses for Frontier AI Deployment, v0.1.

AI SIGMA's first public research project translates emerging AI governance frameworks into practical contract infrastructure.

Purpose

The existing AI governance landscape has produced an abundance of high-level principles and a small but growing set of formal standards. What it has not produced is a library of operative contract language that AI vendors, deployers, and their counsel can drop into agreements today.

This paper opens that library. It is designed for use in SaaS, enterprise AI, procurement, and regulated-industry contracting — the deployment layer where governance becomes real.

Clause areas

Fifteen clauses across seven categories, each with drafting notes and optional variants.

  1. Representations and warranties — AI vendor and deployer-side reps about training data, capability scope, and known limitations.
  2. Evaluation and testing — pre-deployment evaluation obligations, including red-teaming and capability assessments.
  3. Deployment integrity — commitments around model versioning, weights handling, and unauthorized modification.
  4. Incident reporting — classification, notice timelines, and downstream notification obligations.
  5. Post-deployment monitoring — ongoing observation, drift detection, and behavior auditing.
  6. Continuity — service-level expectations for inference availability and successor-version transitions.
  7. Deprecation — sunset notice, migration support, and data-handling commitments at end-of-life.

Framework mapping

Each clause is mapped to its anchor in the principal AI governance frameworks. The mapping table is the operative bridge between principles-level guidance and contract-level language.

  • NIST AI Risk Management Framework — mapped to the GOVERN, MAP, MEASURE, and MANAGE functions.
  • ISO/IEC 42001 — mapped to the AI management system controls.
  • EU GPAI Code of Practice — mapped to transparency, copyright, and systemic-risk commitments for GPAI providers under the EU AI Act.

Publication status

Currently in development. Scheduled for public release in Q3 2026.

v0.1 is the first public release. v0.2 will follow with a model master agreement incorporating the clause library, a clause-selection guide for common deployment scenarios, and the first round of public-comment revisions from the founding cohort.

How to participate

AI SIGMA is forming an invitation-only founding cohort to help review, stress-test, and refine the v0.1 clauses prior to public release. Cohort members work directly with the Founding Co-Chair on the drafting and mapping process.

What follows

The Institute's research program is structured around three forthcoming papers in the founding cohort's first eighteen months. Sequencing is set by the founding cohort.

A fourth paper — on workforce disclosure and continuity standards for AI-adopting enterprises — is planned for the Institute's second year.

Quarterly briefings

AI SIGMA publishes briefings four times a year on the state of AI deployment law, standards, and practice. The briefings include in-progress notes from working groups and recent developments in the regulatory landscape.
